Along the same lines as the article about children and gardening, there is actually a school up in Athol, Massachusetts that teaches adults and students the basics of farming. The idea seems to be the result of a reaction against corporate farmed "products", growing interest by chefs and restaurants in fresh food grown nearby and parents wanting to feed their children food free of pesticides, genetic engineering, etc.

You might think this hasn't got much to do with a site on urban gardening, but it does. If you can't grow or just don't want to be bothered to take care of plants in your urban environment, the next best thing is to buy as much food as you can that is grown locally. You can check whether it's organic or not but just the fact it is grown nearby is a plus nutritionally and for the environment (less fuel used to transport it).
