Gardening can be a great learning tool for yourng children. (They need supervision, of course). They can plan what kind of flowers or plants they would like. Being able to make decisions even on a small scale gives them a sense of ownership. Being outside and caring for plants can help them develop a sense of environment and the world around them.

Check out Cornell's Garden-Based Learning Web site forl child-friendly garden activities, based at the Horticultural Studies Dept. at Cornell University. These ideas and activities can be used by both teachers and parents for children. Here is the link:
